Updated: Sep 3, 2021

2021 Atlantic hurricane season began on Saturday, May 22 and ends on Tuesday, November 30, 2021. Prep before the storm warnings!

10 Steps for remaining safe during hurricane season

  1. Sign up for local alerts and warnings. Monitor local news and weather reports.

  2. Prepare to evacuate by testing your emergency communication plan(s), learning evacuation routes, having a place to stay, and packing a “go bag.”

  3. Stock emergency supplies. Can food, water, and medial supplies.

  4. Protect your property by installing sewer backflow valves, anchoring fuel tanks, reviewing insurance policies, and cataloging belongings.

  5. Collect and safeguard critical financial, medical, educational, and legal documents and records.

  6. For protection from high winds, stay away from windows and seek shelter on the lowest level in an interior room.

  7. Move to higher ground if there is flooding or a flood warning.

  8. Never walk or drive on flooded roads or through water.

  9. Return to the area only after authorities say it is safe to do so. Do not enter damaged buildings until they are inspected by qualified professionals.

  10. Do not drink tap water unless authorities say it is safe.
